To catch you up on what I know and what I understand. Even though the nurses tell me and explain things to me I just can't seem to explain it to anyone else. So bear with me.
Dad is still on the vent. To try to GET OFF the vent: The vent is starts at a setting of 10. It needs be be at least a 5 (or lower). Also the oxygen starts at 100 and needs to be around 50.
Right now dad's vent (or PEEP as the machine says) is at an 8. Yesterday they got him down to a 7 but overnight had to raise it up again.
The oxygen number they are watching is down to 60. This is good. But it needs to be lower.
They put a tube down dad's nose to suction out any air and stomach acids that have been building up.
The doctor told me the other day they were not going to start giving dad any nutrition as he believed dad would be off the vent in a few days.
Today when I went in for a visit the nurse said they are starting the nutrition today. This will go in by IV instead of directly into his stomach.
Dad's heart, blood pressure, and everything they watch is doing fine. His lungs just aren't ready to work on their own yet.
