PEEP -- the nurse explained it this way.....or at least the is the way I understood it.....
When you exhale you are forcing the air out of your lungs. With the PEEP it forces a puff of air into the lungs when you exhale to keep the lungs from collapsing. Makes since. Sort of like the CPAP machine dad uses at night for his sleep apnea.
The higher the setting on the ventilator the more air it forces into the lungs? I am guessing this. Because the doctor wants the PEEP number to be as low as possible. It starts out at at setting of 10 and they want it to be at around a 5 or less before they try to take dad off the ventilator.
I'm finally "getting" some of this.
