Monday June 15

Today dad went to see Dr B -- his surgeon. Dr B took out dad's feeding tube! YAY! That thing has been a big pain for dad. I just hope that dad keeps eating all they bring him so that he gets all the nutrition he needs.

Dr B said that he saved dad from dying twice when he was in the hospital. He also told dad he should be glad he had a daughter like me. He told that several times. Made me feel really good.

Dad doesn't have to go back to see Dr B for a year. Then we will talk about a surgery to close up dad's wound and taking out the colostomy. Dr B also said he wanted to see daddy walking then (dad was in a wheelchair today).

There was some miss communication where dad is staying today. I got so mad I could hardly see straight. Dr B told dad that he could eat whatever he wanted now that the feeding tube was out. Evidently dad heard "you can have whatever you want to DRINK or EAT". Dad is still on thickened liquids which he hates. Dr B sent a progress report that said he took out the feeding tube and was to see dad in a year. Somehow the nurse at the Manor said dad could have whatever he wanted and started giving dad water to drink. When dad called me and told me this I practically flew over and went straight to the nurse's desk.

A nurse (not dad's) looked at all of dad's paper work and said that he was still on the thickened liquids, I said he told me a nurse said he could have whatever he wanted to drink. Dad's nurse walked up then and asked what was going on. She said dad's nurse on the shift before her told her dad could have anything he wanted. Nurse just took the other's word for it without looking at dad's chart.

Where did the 1st shift nurse get the idea dad could have whatever he wanted? I am guessing that is what dad told him and he DIDN'T CHECK THE PAPER WORK to back up what dad told him. I'm just guessing this as I KNOW the paperwork did NOT back this up.

The nurse had to go back to dad and tell him there was a mix up and he couldn't have any liquid he wanted that it had to be thickened. Dad was NOT happy.

Everything is straight now but I am still thinking about what to do -- if anything -- about the nurse who gave dad water. Also earlier today a CNA (I guess that is what she is) put some ice in dad's room. I told her he wasn't to have any and she claimed she had to put it in every room. I didn't believe that but I let it go as the ice was out of dad's reach. But when I brought that up to the nurses when talking about giving dad water they assured me that the CNA did NOT have to put ice in every room. I wonder about that person, something about her just irks me for some reason.

Keep those prayers going up for dad and me.

Kathy
